Born as Miesha Theresa Tate on August 18, 1986, in Tacoma, Washington. Tate’s parents are Rob and Michelle Tate. She grew up with a sibling, a younger sister named Felicia Martin. As an adolescent, she was a tomboy and regularly mingled with the boys in her neighborhood. She received her high school education at Franklin Pierce High School, where, interestingly enough, she was a member of the boys’ ring team from her freshman year until she graduated. In high school, she won the 2005 Washington State Girls’ Wrestling Championship 2005.
Tate was introduced to mixed martial arts during her studies at Central Washington University, and her wrestling background made her a perfect match. In March 2006, she was defeated in her first amateur fight but managed to set a 5-1 record (win-lose) before finally turning pro the following year.
In November 2006 Tate made her debut as a professional mixed martial artist at the HOOKnSHOOT Women’s Grand Prix. She won her first fight of the tournament before losing to eventual champion Kaitlin Young. In UFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz on March 5, 2016, Tate defeated Holly Holm and became UFC Women’s Bantam Weight Champion. This proved to be the last victory of her career as she lost to Amanda Nunes in July 2016 and was defeated by Raquel Pennington in UFC 205 in November 2016.
