Will There Be A Tomb Raider Sequel And Will Alicia Vikander Be In It?

In 2018, the Tomb Raider reboot was released and excited viewers flocked to the cinemas to watch Alicia Vikander give life to one of the most famous characters in video game history, Lara Croft. While the film didn’t really astound audiences as hoped, it will be getting a second chance to do so. Yea, buckle up. Lara Croft will be returning to the big screen again and here are all the facts we have on it.

Will There Really Be A Tomb Raider Sequel?

Considering that Tomb Raider was tanked by critics and it didn’t exactly bring in big bucks at the box office, the announcement that a sequel was in the works came as a bit of a surprise. The movie made $60 million at the domestic box office and ended its run with a total grossing of $280 million worldwide. Looking at its $94 million budget, it made a considerable profit, which was enough to convince Warner Bros and MGM to keep the Tomb Raider reboot going.

The Tomb Raider sequel will be written by Amy Jump, who was brought on to replace Alastair Siddons and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Amy Jump is a very experienced screenwriter who has worked on the screenplays for movies such as Free Fire, A Field in England, Wheatley’s High-Rise, and Freak Shift. At the moment, it is still unclear if Roar Uthaug will be retained as the director of Tomb Raider or if someone else will be coming on board.

Hopefully, the Tomb Raider sequel will do its best to move away from the elements that didn’t work in the first installment while capitalizing on the ones that did, so it can have a more successful outing.

What Is The Release Date for the Tomb Raider Sequel?

The good news is that there will be a Tomb Raider sequel for sure, the not-so-great news is that you will have to wait a while for it. The screenplay for the film hasn’t been written yet, so it will take some time before production begins and we can start looking forward to seeing the Tomb Raider sequel at the movie theatres.

The first movie was filmed in early 2017 and released in March 2018. Going by this, we can project that if the script is completed within the year, we can expect the Tomb Raider sequel to hit the cinemas in early 2021.

Alicia had to undergo rigorous training in order to play the ass-kicking, knife-wielding, and gun-slinging Lara Croft. She trained in weights, climbing, swimming, MMA fighting, and archery amongst others, which explains her abs of steel in the movie. In the meantime, Alicia is working on other movies like Earthquake Bird, The Glorias: A Life on the Road, and The Green Knight.

The 2018 movie also had Dominic West, Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Walton Goggins as part of the main cast lineup. However, it is still unclear who amongst them will be returning for the Tomb Raider sequel.

What Will Be The Plot for the Tomb Raider Sequel?

The first movie ended with Lara Croft saving the world by preventing the deadly ancient virus from leaving the tomb, then returning home to take her place at the helm of affairs in her father’s company, Croft Holdings.

She soon realizes that Trinity, the dangerous group that wanted to unleash the virus on the world, is tied to the company through another company called Patna, which is headed by her father’s business partner, Ana Miller. This leads her to suspect that Ana is in cahoots with Trinity, and fuels her determination to carry on her father’s legacy by bringing down Trinity.

The plot for the sequel is still unknown at this time as the screenplay hasn’t even been written yet. It has been suggested that the Tomb Raider sequel will pick up from where the former left off, but there’s a possibility it might choose to go in a completely different direction, with a new mission and a new tomb to raid.
