Wilson Chandler is one of those NBA players, you can’t spot out in a game for the wrong reasons. His strength, agility, and skills, especially at the basket area are second to none. The Michigan native began his career in high school, then went on to play college basketball at DePaul University for just two years before declaring for the NBA Draft.

Chandler currently plays the small forward position for the Philadelphia 76ers but actually began his NBA career in 2007 with the New York Knicks and has also played for Denver Nuggets. During the 2011 NBA lockout, he played for Zhejiang Guangsha of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

Wilson Chandler Profile

Chandler was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, on 10th May 1987. He began playing basketball right from his elementary school days at Fairplain East Elementary School Benton Harbor in Michigan and would continue in high school at Benton Harbor High School.

During his high school career, Wilson Chandler was named Michigan All-State both as a sophomore and as a junior. The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan also named him the first-team All-State. During his senior year, he totaled an average of twenty-four points, twelve rebounds, four blocks and five assists per game. He was also named the 2005 Mr. Basketball of Michigan.

After high school, he got collegiate offers from notable schools like Michigan State, Indiana University, Ohio State, University of Dayton and Purdue University, but he chooses DePaul University over them. His first breakout game was against Creighton University, where he recorded seventeen points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.

In a December game against Dayton, Wilson Chandler made sixteen rebounds, the highest by a freshman since Quentin Richardson (who was the first to make that record in 1999). As a freshman, he was honored with the Big East Rookie of the Week twice. He also earned the Big East freshman team.

At the end of his freshman season, Chandler recorded an average of 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, ranking tenth in the Big East. As a sophomore, he made 14.7 points, 1.4 blocks and 6.9 rebounds per game and was named the to the Big East all second team.

NBA Career/Stats

In 2007, Wilson Chandler entered for the NBA Draft and was selected 23rd overall by the New York Knicks but spent most of the season on the bench until head coach Isiah Lord Thomas II fixed him into the starting rotation. His first game with the team was against Orlando Magic and he recorded twenty-three points. At the end of the season, averaging 7.3 points per game.

The next season. he averaged  14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He remained with the team until  February 2011 when he was traded to the Denver Nuggets. At his debut game, he scored sixteen points against the Boston Celtics. He would go ahead to make nine points and eight rebounds in his first playoff. Despite struggling in the playoff, he ended up with an average of 4.8 points and 5.0 rebounds.

During the 2011 NBA lockout, Chandler signed with Zhejiang Guangsha Lions of the CBA playing under Dallas Mavericks former head coach Jim Cleamons. After the lockout, Wilson returned to the NBA in 2012 and re-sign with the Nuggets in a five-year deal worth $37 million. His season ended prematurely that year due to a labral tear on his left hip that resulted in him undergoing a surgery.

In July 2015, Chandler signed a contract extension with the team but again he could not play for the entire season as he had to undergo another surgery, this time on his right hip after suffering a labral tear. In 2017, he scored a career-high thirty-six points in a  game against the Sacramento Kings which ended in his team’s 108–96 win.

In July 2018, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers alongside a future 2nd-round draft pick for cash considerations.

His Family Life

Wilson Chandler was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan to Wilson Chandler Sr. and Marie Thomas. He was however raised by his grandparents. His parents saw great potentials in him and were convinced that his grandparents were the best people to raise him up, thus, they sent him over to live with them.

And according to Chandler, his grandparents did a good job in raising him properly; especially his grandmother who was soft-spoken but yet taught him the important things of life. He loved basketball from childhood and this was welcomed by his grandmother who was a big Michael Jordan fan so little Wilson grew up as a big Bulls fan.

His Height Weight and Other Facts

The NBA small forward stands at the height of 6 ft 8 in (2.06 m), with an athletic built body that weighs 102 kg (225 Ibs).

Chandler is a vegan. he began his vegan diet while recovering from his hip surgery.

One outdoor activity he enjoys is fishing. According to him, fishing is something he has done his whole life. He grew up fishing on the bank and rivers of Michigan, thus, anytime he wants to relax, he goes fishing.
