For her education, Smith went to New York University where she studied marketing. She started her career in 1989 when she worked as a media director for Jeff McKay, Inc. until 1999. With a keen sense of fashion, her next job was as a fashion and beauty advertising director for Vibe Magazine from 1999 to 2005.
From 2004 to 2005, Bevy Smith worked for Rolling Stone Magazine as a senior director of fashion advertising. She would go back to Vibe Magazine in 2006 where she would work for a year as a fashion editor at large. From 2013 to 2015, she was the co-host of Fashion Queens on Bravo.
