Paolo was born on 11 July 1990 in New York. He grew up in the care of his parents; Julia Mendelson, a vocal coach and classical pianist, and Collin Paolo, a writer and screenwriter. The actor who is of Jewish descent became active in the acting scene in 2002 but his first major movie appearance was in 2003 Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated Mystic River. His role as Young Sean in the mystery crime drama was well praised. A year later, he featured on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live as Travis O’Connell, a recruiting character.
In 2006, he decided to develop his acting capacity by getting more experience. In that spirit, he joined the professional performing Arts School the same year at the same time as Sarah Hyland, Paul Iacono, and Taylor Momsen. He took classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. More that, Paolo attended Appel Farm Arts and Music Center Summer Arts Camp located in Elmer, New Jersey for a number of summers. In 2008, he furthered his education, attending New York University for one semester.
His career grew to another level when he landed a role in the hit teen series Gossip Girl as the little brother of Blake Lively. He was cast as Eric van der Woodsen the brother of socialite Serena Van der Woodsen on the show when it was launched in 2007. On the show, the New York-bred actor starred in many episodes and had many leading storylines including Eric’s suicide attempt and him coming out as gay.
Although he didn’t take part in the filming of the fourth season along with the Jenny and Vanessa characters, the three actors made a brief return to feature for the last time on the show’s finale (sixth season), New York, I Love You XOXO.
After he left the teen series, he dropped his teenage days’ look and as expected, his career took a new turn. With his new look, he has landed other big on-screen deals that befits the beard he now sports.
One of the deals in the making of the vampire apocalypse film Stake Land directed by Jim Mickle took him off from his comfort zone in 2010. He also starred in ABC series Revenge as Declan Porter, the following year which was when he switched his focus fully from Gossip Girl to new projects.
Nonetheless, his character was removed in the second season’s finale in May 2013. But that didn’t hold him back as he also starred in Rush Hour as Henry, in The Staklander as Martin, and in Friend Request as Kobe. He also played Nate in The Brave and Jason in Business Doing Pleasure.
Other movies he did include the two Oliver Stones films Alexander (2004) and World Trade Centre (2006); Snow Angels directed by David Gordon Green and Favourite Son, his first leading role.
Subsequently, he played a pretty murderer-rapist in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit where he made a return appearance playing a disturbed teenager based on the case of Justin Berry. Paolo was also featured in Camp Hope and The Winning Season.
