Struycken was born on 30 July 1948 in The Hague, Netherlands. He was raised there until the age of 4 when his family left for Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles.
When he was 15 and living on the island of Curaçao, the actor got involved in music and so, he composed some Carribean waltzes. According to him, he hopes to add some more music and come up with an album sometime in the near future.
By the time he was 16, he moved back to his home country where he continued with his education. After high school, he proceeded to a film school in Amsterdam where he studied directing program.
When he graduated from the film school, he moved to the United States, Los Angeles, where he attended the American Film Institute.
After he moved to the states in 1975, he soon found himself working on several projects with Rene Daalder, including a musical feature. It was at that time that he was spotted by Mabel Collins who was the personal assistant to the director of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. She told him they needed him on the project which went on to become his first acting professional acting role in 1978.
The next film that came his way was Die Laughing in 1980 followed by Go West, Young Man in the same year. Carel Struycken appeared in other movies before appearing on one of his most important of them all, The Addams Family as Lurch in 1991. He played the role in the film’s sequels Addams Family Values (1993) and Addams Family Reunion (1998).
With many more movies to his name, his most recent are Another Brick in the Wall (2016) and Gerald’s Game (2017). He has also appeared in a number of TV series such as St. Elsewhere (1988), Twin Peaks (1990 to 1991), and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987 to 1992), and most recently, he was in Twin Peaks: The Return (2017).
