Is ‘Queen Sugar’ Cancelled Or Will There Be A Season 5, When Will It Be Out?

Following its premiere on OWN in 2016, Queen Sugar became one of the network’s biggest hits in its lineup of weekly shows with an average of 1.7 million viewers weekly.

With its compelling storyline and drama that surrounds an African-American family in the south and their farming business, the series is not only one of OWN’s most popular TV shows but the number one Wednesday night’s original series among African-American women with its viewers increasing tremendously.

The Queen Sugar drama series is an adaptation of Natalie Baszile’s novel of the same name, written by Ava DuVernay and has as one of the executive producers. It is the first TV series to assemble an-all female directors who will be directing every episode. The makers of the series’ only desire and aim is to hire only women to direct the show, providing the chance and opportunity to showcase their talents.

As mentioned above, the series is centered on the activities of a Black-American family in Louisiana as they work hard to maintain their sugarcane plantation following the demise of their father. The series characters include Bordelon () Charley Bordelon () and their brother, Ralph Angel Bordelon (); Aunt Vi (Tina Lifford), and her young oil rig boyfriend, Hollywood (Omar Dorsey) as they all struggle to preserve their closely-knitted relationships while dealing with their individual successes and challenges.

Since its premiere, the series has received positive reviews from critics and fans praise it for depicting the strength of black families. However, there are other amazing shows with strong black leads but a lot of people feel the series has reached a milestone that has never been attained in highlighting the unconditional love, strong bond and support of a family without putting them in a not-so-privileged condition.

The first season with 13 episodes premiered on September 6, 2016, it was followed by the second season with 16 episodes on OWN in June 2017. The third season which has 13 episodes was announced in July 2017 and premiered in May 2018 and the fourth season with 13 episodes just ended, leaving fans wondering if the show has been canceled or there will be another season. The popular African-American drama series impressed fans in the closing stages of its fourth season which was renewed in August 2018 and premiered in June 2019, making them yearn for more. With the introduction of a new character – Parker played by Amir Vann, it is obvious that a new foundation has been laid for a continuation of the story, so, the series has not been canceled as there is still more to chew as the producers of the show announced that it will be renewed. The creator and one of the executive producers of the show, Ava DuVernay, says she is thrilled to further explore the beauty, pain, and triumph of this African-American family, with hopes that their story will continue to reach out to the audiences who see themselves in the Bordelons, thus, it is clear that the show will continue with fresh insights and a thrilling plot.

So, When Will Queen Sugar Season 5 Be Out?

The good news is that fans wouldn’t have to wait for long before the fifth season comes out. OWN revealed at the end of season four that the show is coming back next year, 2020. This thrilling news left lovers and fans of the show as excited as ever.

Interestingly, Anthony Sparks is billed to continue as the show-runner for the Black-American family drama, after stepping in to take over form Kat Candler in 2018. Executive producer Ava DuVernay and Sparks would be working closely together on the new project to come up with fresh ideas for the new season.

Whereas it is not yet known what the fresh season would be focusing on, fans and lovers of the show can be sure to expect some eye-catching and jaw-dropping revelations in the series as the Bordelon family continue to rack it up in Louisiana.
