Growing up, he was passionate about theater and performed in several plays during his high school days. In addition to his love for the arts, Tennon was also an athlete in school. He played football for his varsity team as a linebacker. Tennon excelled so much so at football that he earned a scholarship with which he got admitted to the University of Tulsa.
At Tulsa, Tennon would go on to make history as the first person of color to graduate from the theater department. By the mid-80s, Julius Tennon had begun his acting career. Some of the films he has had roles include the 1987 film The Man Who Broke 1000 alongside other notable actors such as Val Kilmer, Kyra Sedgwick, Charles Durning, James Keach, Clancy Brown, Sonia Braga, and Elisha Cook Jr. Tennon played the role of Nub.
