Wendy was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the U.S. on July 2, 1954, to actor father Richard Schaal and his wife Lois. She attended the Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles, California, and graduated in 1976. Wendy is formally the stepdaughter of actress Valerie Harper.

Wendy’s father Richard died on November 4, 2014, at the age of 86. Although there was no information on the cause of his death, the American TV actor was best known for his skills in sketch and improvisational comedy. He also was featured in a number of TV series such as the 1970s sitcoms The Mary Tyler Moore Show where he acted as Howard Arnell, Paul, Chuckles the Clown, and Dino in some of the play’s episodes.
Wendy’s father got married three times to three different women. His first was with her mother Lois Treacy but they separated after Wendy was born. Richard’s next marriage was with Valerie Harper an American Hollywood Icon best known for her leading roles as Rhoda Morgenstern in the 1970s series The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off, Rhoda, and as Valerie Hogan in Valerie. Richard’s marriage to Harper later crashed in 1978 and she remarried In 1987 to Tony Cacciotti while Richard married his third wife Tasha Brittain. Wendy’s paternal grandparents are Victor Cornelius Schall, a machinist, and Margaret Schall, a telephone operator. They both died in 1981 and 1983.
