She was born as Sharon Yvonne Stone, the second of four kids born to Joseph William Stone II, a factory worker, and his wife Dorothy Stone, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, on March 10, 1958. Her siblings are Kelly Stone, Mike Stone, and Patrick Stone.

In 1977, Sharon dropped out of school in order to pursue a career in modeling. She got signed to the Ford agency and moved to New York.
