The popular NBC Today Show has been on a high rating since 2016. The show finished at the very top in the 2016 ratings, ending in the lucrative 25-54 demographic and thrashing Good Morning America of ABC and This Morning of CBS. Tamron Hall is the first African American broadcast journalist to ever host the popular show. FORBES gathered from a source that when it comes to news programming, Today Show accounts for more than 50 % of NBC’s revenue, in fact, it is described as the revenue driver of the network since it brought in more than $435 million in 2015 and Tamron has been with Today for just a few years.
With such massive success, it’s fair to wonder why she had to leave it all behind.
Why Did Tamron Hall Leave Today Show?
The decision to leave Today was not an easy one for the broadcast journalist Tamron Hall, she only made that decision after she heard that she will be relinquishing her 9 am time slot to Megyn Kelly, a former Fox News star who recently joined the NBC team. According to an insider who was interviewed by PEOPLE, Tamron was unlikely to settle for sitting on the sidelines. NBC rep said that the network was not happy with Tamron’s decision to quit, in fact, her co-workers expressed their disappointment in her decision but all the same, they wished her well in her next endeavor. In her expression of excitement about her new chapter Tamron describes her departure from Today as a new day.
In the ensuing week, the details of the story were made known to the public through an issue of PEOPLE. The reasons why an accomplished broadcast journalist who through diligence and perseverance has worked her way up through the ranks at NBC will suddenly feel the need to abandon her dream job where things were going extremely well for her just a couple of weeks ago were exposed. Her decision to quit was like an enigma to her fans because Tamron has been enjoying a lot of perks at NBC. In addition to presenting gigs at MSNBC Live and Dateline, she has been having a bonus exposure at Today, she has been filling in for Savannah Guthrie the host of 9 a.m. Hour who has been on maternity leave.
A few days back, the Today Team was congratulated for making it to the top of the rating scale by NBC through an email. PEOPLE gathered from a source very close to Tamron that the Today’s Team has displaced ABC’s long-running Live with Kelly in the ratings for some weeks and then it happened like magic, information was circulated that a new anchor for Today was coming on board and who was it? None other than the longtime host of ABC’s Live with Kelly, Megyn Kelly. Tamron, being the likely host to make way for Kelly to be accommodated, made the move voluntarily.
Fans of Today who heard that Tamron was on the verge of losing her hosting duties came to her defense, and it was well noted by fans that a black woman is to be replaced by someone who has had issues with racism in the past. Although Tamron Hall left Today out of her own free will, it was gathered that the broadcast Journalist was hurt, furious and offended that she will lose her highest-profile role to Kelly without any compensation from NBC. Tamron who saw the move as a demotion was supported by The National Association of Black Journalists who condemned NBC’s decision in its entirety. They tagged the act of swapping Tamron for Kelly as “whitewashing.”
NBC later consented to meet and deliberate on the matter with the National Association of Black Journalists. Tamron also found inspiration in Iola Johnson, who is the first African American news anchor in Dallas.
Where is Tamron Hall Now?
It seems Tamron had finally broken the long silence since leaving NBC. In a video on her Twitter handle, she took time to express her appreciation to her fans for their unflinching support and also
revealed what she has been doing since leaving NBC and MSNBC.
The broadcast journalist told fans that she spent the first two days after unexpectedly finding herself out of a job just cleaning her closet and getting rid of some excess designer outfit.
It was later reported that Tamron has bagged a new job with
Investigation Discovery. The group president Henry Schleiff while ringing the opening bell at NASDAQ to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the network decided to give Tamron a surprise with the new engagement.
Tamron is the current host of Deadline: Crime on Investigation Discovery.
