Dennis Schröder is a professional NBA player of German descent who currently plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder as a point guard. He began playing professionally back in 2010 with German club SG Braunschweig, at the end of the 2012/2013 season with the German league club, he decided to enter the NBA Draft and was selected seventeenth overall by the Atlanta Hawks. In July 2018, he was traded to Oklahoma City Thunder.

Schroder was born in Braunschweig, Germany, on the 15th day of September 1993. His first love wasn’t actually basketball but skateboarding. He discovered his love for the game of basketball at the age of eleven and decided to develop it and make something worthwhile out of it and interestingly, he has. Today, he is considered one of the most talented basketball players in Germany.

The young German began playing basketball professionally in 2010 at the age of seventeen with SG Braunschweig (feeder team of the of Phantoms Braunschweig). In his first season with the team, he made an average of 1.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 7.8 points per game. The next season, he had a major breakthrough, in twenty-three regular-season games, he recorded an average of 6.7 assists and 17.8 points per game. His team would later go into the playoff where he averaged 5.1 assists and 18.8 points in just four games.

In that same season, Schröder also played a total of thirty games for Phantoms Braunschweig of the Basketball Bundesliga, recording an average of 0.8 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 2.3 points in about eight minutes per game. During the 2012/2013 season, he was named the German League’s Most Improved Player of the Year as well as the Best Young German Player of the Year after playing a total of thirty-two games for the Phantoms Braunschweig and averaging 2.5 rebounds, 12 points, and 3.2 assists per game.

In 2013, Dennis Schröder was selected to play for the World Select Team at the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit, where he led the team to a 112-98 win after scoring eighteen points, two rebounds, and six assists. In that same year, he declared for the NBA Draft.

NBA Career

He was selected 17th overall by the Atlanta Hawks at the 2013 NBA Draft and would enter the season with the team as their second point guard behind Jeff Teague. In December, he played for Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League. At the end of his rookie season, he played a total of forty-nine games for the Hawks and recorded 3.7 points per game.

The next season, he scored a career-high of twenty-two points in a game against the Dallas Mavericks, He also took part in the Rising Stars Challenge where he contributed to the team’s 121–112 win over Team USA by scoring thirteen points and a game-high of 9 assists and 3 steals. As a result of his outstanding performance, ESPN analysts named him young Tony Parker.

In 2016, he signed a 4-year contract extension with the franchise worth $70 million and took over as the team’s lead guard after Teague was traded to the Indiana Pacers. His first game after that was against the Cleveland Cavaliers where he scored a career-high of twenty-eight points, In his next game, he had another career-high 31 points.

In March 2018, Dennis Schröder set a new career-high record of 41 points in a game against Utah Jazz which ended in a 99–94 win. In July, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 3-team deal between the Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Dennis has also played for the German under 18 as well her national under 20 teams. He was part of the team that represented the country at the  2012 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship, where the team came fifth. His first appearance with the German senior national team was in 2014 in a game against Finland. He has also played at EuroBasket twice (2015 and 2017).

Dennis Schröder is the son of a German father, Axel Schröder and a Gambian mother, Fatou Schröder. His father died in 2009. Dennis has a brother with whom he skateboarded until the age of eleven when he developed an interest in basketball.

He began taking the game of basketball seriously after the death of his father. His agent is Ademola Okulaja who once played for the German national basketball team.

Dennis isn’t one of the tallest players in the NBA and he isn’t the shortest either, the point guard stands at a height of 6’1″ (1.85 m) and weighs 76 kg (168 pounds). His wingspan measures 2.03 m.
