Upon graduation, he enrolled at Syracuse University where he was a walk-on on the school’s basketball team. By the time he was in his senior year, Boeheim had become a much better basketball player and was named the team’s captain. That year, he led the school to a 22-6 record that took them into the NCAA tournament for only the second time in their history. Boeheim went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in social science before embarking on a professional basketball career that saw him win two championships with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern Professional Basketball League.

The following year, Boeheim’s boss vacated his head coach role for another one, giving room for him to take up the role. In his first season in charge, the rookie coach helped his school to a 26-4 record and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 place. Syracuse, under Boeheim’s leadership, soon became a perennial post-season team, making an appearance in either the NCAA or NIT tournaments every year in the 1980s. In 1986, the year Syracuse managed a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament, Jim Boeheim was offered the opportunity to take the head coach job at Ohio State but turned it down to continue his stay at his alma mater. He has since that time remained very loyal to the school which he has enjoyed considerable success within his four-plus decade college basketball coaching career.
