Kevin Johnson is a professional cornerback currently playing for NFL’s Houston Texans. He began playing American football in high school as both a running back and a cornerback. He would later play college football at Wake Forest from 2010 to 2014 before starting his professional career with the Houston Texans in 2015 after being selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Kevin Johnson was born on August 5, 1992, in Clarksville, Maryland. He is one of the two children born to Judy and Kevin Johnson Sr. He has a sister named Hillary Johnson. Kevin attended River Hill High School, Clarksville, Maryland, where he was introduced to the game of American football.

He played both the cornerback position as well as the running back position and was a part of the River Hill defense that recorded eleven shutouts in 2007, five in 2008, and another five in 2009. Johnson helped the Hawks to 2A state championships in 2007 and 2008 with the team ranking at #23rd in the USA Today high school poll in 2008.

He would later be named first-team all-state and first-team All-Met at cornerback and during his senior year. He was also named the Offensive Player of the Year by the Columbia Flier/Howard County Times. He was ranked as the nation’s No. 45 cornerback in 2010 and ESPN.com projected him a 3-star recruit.

Johnson committed to Wake Forest University where he kicked off his college career. He made his collegiate debut in September in a game against Presbyterian recording 4 tackles. Kevin Johnson would end his first season appearing in 11 games, starting 5, tallying 31 tackles, including 20 solo stops and 2 pass breakups.

He redshirted during his sophomore year after being declared academically ineligible to compete. He returned in 2012, played in all of the 12 games as a starter. He finished that season with fifty-eight tackles (34 solo stops included) and was ranked fifth on the team’s defense. Later that year, the coaches named him honorable mention All-ACC.

During his junior year, he was ranked 2nd in the ACC after recording 1.25 passes defended per game. He also started all the twelve games that season finished 5th on the team with 58 tackles, 3 interceptions, a team-best 12 pass breakups, and was named All-ACC honorable mention by the media. Kevin finished his college career with a total of 189 tackles and 7 interceptions and received honorable mention All-ACC from the media and second-team from the ACC Coaches.

Professional Career

NFLDraftScout.com named Kevin Johnson the second-best cornerback in the 2015 NFL draft out of the 212 available and several college analysts projected him a first-round draft choice. The fresh college graduate attended the NFL Combine that year, completed all the drill and workouts except for bench press.

He also attended private workouts and visits with several other teams like the Baltimore Ravens and the Dallas Cowboys. On the D’ day, Johnson was selected 16th overall by the Houston Texans in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, he became the second cornerback to be selected behind Trae Waynes, who was selected 11th overall.

In May 2015, Johnson signed a full four-year contract with the Houston Texans worth $10.04 million including a signing bonus of $5.50 million. Johnson would compete against A.J Bouye for the job of the 3rd cornerback in the training camp and he did get the job as coach Bill O’Brien named him the right man for the job behind Kareem Jackson and Johnathan Joseph.

His professional debut was in the team’s opening season game against the Kansas City Chiefs, where he recorded 2 solo tackles in the 20–27 loss. Johnson appeared in sixteen games that season, starting ten and he finished his rookie season with a total of 54 combined tackles, 9 pass deflections, and one interception.

Despite breaking a foot during one of the team’s games and being placed on injured reserve, Johnson still appeared in six games, started three, and ended his second season with 25 combined tackles and 3 pass deflections.

He entered the training camp in 2017 competing for the starting cornerback Kareem Jackson after Bouye left for Jacksonville Jaguars. He won the position but later relinquished it to Kareem after he suffered an MCL injury that kept him away for about six weeks. He ended 2017 appearing in a total of twelve games, starting four. He also recorded 45 tackles and 2 pass deflections.
