He is one of the five children of Karl Subban, who worked as a school principal, and his wife Maria. His parents are both Caribbean immigrants to Canada. While he was growing up, Subban developed an interest in playing hockey from a very young age and he completed his youth career with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League.
