Sergio Busquets Burgos was born on July 16, 1988, in Sabadell, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain to Loli Burgos and Carles Busquets. Busquets was raised alongside a younger brother Aitor Busquets who is also a professional football player. His father Carles Busquets was also a professional footballer who played for Spanish club side FC Barcelona as a goalkeeper during the 90s. After the club clinched its 3rd champion’s league trophy on May 27, 2009, Busquets and his father became the 3rd father-and-son duo to win the Champions League playing for the same club side.

In 1995, the then 7-year-old Sergio Busquets joined the youth team of Catalan club CD Badia del Vallès after which he played for CEF Barberà Andalucía, UE Lleida as well as UFB Jàbac Terrassa. In the summer of 2005, the talented player joined Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia Youth Academy,  marking the beginning of one of the most illustrious football careers in the history of the game.

Due to his impressive form, Busquets swiftly made his way through the ranks of the Barcelona Youth teams before eventually earning a spot on the senior team. He scored his first goal on October 12, 2008, in the team’s 5-0 thrashing of Basel in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. His 2008-09 debut season proved highly successful as the club clinched the La Liga, the UEFA Champions League as well as Copa del Rey titles. On a personal note, Sergio Busquets received the 2009 La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year Award.

During Busquet’s second season (2009-10), he earned much more playing time than Coach Guardiola’s first-choice midfielder. Over the years, he has continued in this great form, playing as a defensive midfielder and as a central midfielder on a few occasions.

Just like on the club level, Sergio Busquets has also enjoyed a highly successful run with his Spanish national team.
