Sergio Busquets Burgos was born on July 16, 1988, in Sabadell, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain to Loli Burgos and Carles Busquets. Busquets was raised alongside a younger brother Aitor Busquets who is also a professional football player. His father Carles Busquets was also a professional footballer who played for Spanish club side FC Barcelona as a goalkeeper during the 90s. After the club clinched its 3rd champion’s league trophy on May 27, 2009, Busquets and his father became the 3rd father-and-son duo to win the Champions League playing for the same club side.

In 1995, the then 7-year-old Sergio Busquets joined the youth team of Catalan club CD Badia del Vallès after which he played for CEF Barberà Andalucía, UE Lleida as well as UFB Jàbac Terrassa. In the summer of 2005, the talented player joined Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia Youth Academy,  marking the beginning of one of the most illustrious football careers in the history of the game.

Due to his impressive form, Busquets swiftly made his way through the ranks of the Barcelona Youth teams before eventually earning a spot on the senior team. He spent 2 impressive seasons (2005-06 & 2006-07) in Barca’s U19A team before making it into the team’s B squad in the 2007-08 season under coach Pep Guardiola. When Guardiola took charge of Barcelona’s first team in the 2008-09 season, he could not help but bring Busquets with him.

On September 13, 2008, Busquets marked his La Liga debut for FC Barcelona, starting in the team’s 1–1 home draw against Racing de Santander. His 2008-09 debut season proved highly successful as the club clinched the La Liga, the UEFA Champions League as well as Copa del Rey titles. On a personal note, Sergio Busquets received the 2009 La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year Award.

During Busquet’s second season (2009-10), he earned much more playing time than Coach Guardiola’s first-choice midfielder. Over the years, he has continued in this great form, playing as a defensive midfielder and as a central midfielder on a few occasions.

Just like on the club level, Sergio Busquets has also enjoyed a highly successful run with his Spanish national team. He marked his first appearance for Spain’s under-21 team on October 11, 2008, in an away game against Switzerland. He scored his team’s only goal in the game which ended 1-2 in favor of the hosts.

Less than 6 months later, Busquets earned his first cap for the senior team in Spain’s international friendly against England in February 2009. He marked his world cup debut on April 1, 2009, when he replaced David Silva in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Turkey. Leading up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament, Busquets displayed an impressive form which earned him a permanent spot on the senior national team. He was the first-choice midfielder during Spain’s victorious outing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Busquets started all the games which the eventual champions played during the tournament.
