Shaquill Griffin Bio

The talented football cornerback was born Shaquill Griffin in St. Petersburg, Florida on July 20, 1995. He was born to Afro-American parents Terry Griffin and his wife Tangie Griffin. Shaquill holds an American nationality and belongs to the Afro-American ethnic background. He grew up along with his twin brother in St. Peterburg where he attended Lakewood High School, St. Petersburg. During his high school, Shaquill participated in various sporting events organized by his school including football as well as track and field events. He played the position of cornerback for the Lakewood Spartans, finishing his high school career in 2013.

After his graduation from Lakewood, Shaquill was scouted by many universities who offered him attractive scholarships; nevertheless, he turned them down because of his twin brother. He accepted an offer from the University of Central Florida which offered a scholarship to the Griffin twins. Playing for the UCF Knights, Shaquill featured in four games with a total of 6 combined tackles and one pass defended.

The following year, he saw action in six games; thus finishing the season with a record of 15 combined tackles and one interception. During his junior year in 2015, he had one fumble recovery, defended 11 passes, one interception, and 43 combined tackles. In his senior year, he hauled a total of 4 interceptions, defended 15 passes with 49 combined tackles. At the end of the 2016 season, Shaquill was named to the All-Conference Second-team while his brother won the AAC’s Defensive Player of the Year Award. Shaquill was listed among the 2017 NFL draft prospects. He left the school one year ahead of his twin brother Shaquem.

Professional Career

During the 2017 NFL draft, Shaquill was picked by the Seattle Seahawks as the 90th player to be selected overall that year. He signed up with the Seahawks with a four-year contract worth $3.25 million including a signing bonus of $758,620. Joining the team, Shaquill competed against DeShawn Shead, Jeremy Lane, and Neiko Thorpe for the starting shirt. He was later named the fourth cornerback behind Richard Sherman, Neiko Thorpe, and Jeremy Lane. During his first professional appearance for the Seahawks, Shaquill made ten combined tackles and deflected one pass against the Green Bay Packers.

Subsequently, Shaquill became a starting cornerback for the Seahawks following Lane’s absence. He finished his rookie season with a total of 15 pass deflections and 59 combined tackles. He was rated 77.2 percent by the Pro Football Focus and was placed 58th on the list of 2017 qualified cornerbacks.

Yes, Shaquill isn’t the only member of his family that plays football; he has a twin brother named Shaquem Griffin who plays the position of linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL. Shaquem was born two minutes after his brother Shaquill on July 20, 1995. He also played college football along with his brother at the University of Central Florida.

Shaquem had an amniotic band syndrome from birth which led to the amputation of his left hand. Nevertheless, he has never underperformed in his football career. Interestingly, Shaquill was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in 2017 and the following year; his brother Shaquem was also drafted by the Seahawks as the 141st overall selection during the NFL draft of 2018.
