Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe was born on the 6th of February, 1993, in Lexington, Kentucky. She is the eldest child of three born to two college professors, Michael and Aimie Kachingwe. Her name Tinashe means ‘We are with God’ in the Shona language, the language of the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
Tinashe and her family moved to Los Angeles when she was eight and the young songstress attended Crescenta Vally High School for a year before finishing early to pursue her dream of a career in music full time.

In 2012, Tinashe released her debut solo mixtape, In Case We Die, which was recorded in her home studio. The mixtape was received positively by music blogs and critics. On July 13, 2012, Tinashe was signed to RCA Records. After the signing, she released her second mixtape, Reverie on September 6, 2012. It was also well received.
Her billboard debut was a single off her first album, Aquarius. The song, 2 on, featured American Rapper Schoolboy Q and debuted at number 89 of the Billboard Hot 100. It went on to peak at number 24.
Her first solo album, Aquarius was released on October 7, 2014, to critical acclaim. The album debuted at number 17 of the Billboard 200 and was voted third in the top 10 Best R&B Albums of 2014.
