Julia Goerges is one of the few German women doing great things in professional tennis. Like every other athlete, she has had her fair share of highs and lows but ultimately, she always seems to find a way to reinvent herself after every fall. Since turning pro in 2005, Julia Goerges has won at least 5 WTA (including 3 singles and 2 doubles) and 6 ITF.
Who is Julia Goerges?
Julia Goerges was born on 2 November 1988, in Bad Oldesloe, West Germany. Goerges hails from a family of financial workers. Both her parents Klaus and Inge Görges including her maternal half-sister, Maike all work in insurance. But instead of continuing in the family’s line of work, Julia from the early age of 5 sought to be different and chose tennis as her own life interest.
She played with heart under the tutelage of Sascha Nensel, while idolizing Swiss great, Martina Hingis. In 2005, at the age of 17, Julia was ready to go pro. She started out on the ITF Women’s Circuit before slowly venturing into the WTA Tour. By 2008, Goerges had broken into the top 100 rankings. Two years later in 2010, Goerges broke into the top 50 after winning her first career WTA title at the Gastein Ladies.
Goerges enjoyed a steady rise in her career between 2010 and 2012. During that period, she won the Fed Cup in February 2011 and the Stuttgart Title for which she won by beating the then-world number one Caroline Wozniacki. She enjoyed another spectacular year in 2012 breaking into the top 20 rankings by the end of the year.
Unfortunately, Goerges was unable to keep up with her excellent play as her performance began to wane in 2013. The bad performances continued through to 2015 when Goerges fell from the top 100 rankings. In order to get back in the saddle, Goerges decided to clean house by doing a complete overhaul on her team. She let go of her longtime coach Sascha Nensel, changed her physio, and even relocated. Goerges changed residence from the north of Germany to the south.
Fortunately, Goerges didn’t regret her decisions as her performance began to improve. 2017 proved to be a successful year. Upon the fourth time of asking, Goerges won her first singles title since 2011. It was the Kremlin Cup which she lifted by beating Russian Daria Kasatkina. Thankfully, Goerges leaped back into the top 20 rankings. Winning the cup, qualified her for the WTA Elite Trophy tournament which she went on to lift, beating Coco Vandeweghe in the final. It was the biggest win of her career at the time.
In February 2018, for the first time in her career, Julia Goerges broke into the top 10 rankings after winning the ASB Classic at Auckland. She reached the semi’s in Wimbledon 2018 but her hope of reaching the finals was truncated by a loss to Serena Williams.
When it comes to her personal life, the German sportswoman is incredibly private. To the best of our knowledge, Julia Goerges does not have any husband in her life, as of the time of this writing. The last time that news regarding her romantic life surfaced online was back in October 2015 when she was spotted locking lips with a mystery guy that was later identified as the team physiotherapist of the South African tennis player, Kevin Anderson. His name is Florian Zitzelsberger.
Cameras spotted the duo steal a kiss together while they watched from the stands an ATP Erste Bank Open game Anderson played against Johnson in Vienna, Austria. It was Julia’s first time in the city. She had taken a vacation trip to the city after a neck injury forced her to crash out from the women’s tournament in Luxembourg. Further findings revealed Julia’s date Florian Zitzelsberger to be a citizen of Bravia who has affiliations with CorpusCare Physiotherapie in Regensburg, Germany.
The world waited for more news about Julia and her supposed new boyfriend Florian but none came. The star continues to operate her romantic life away from the prying eyes of the media
