For him, one of the most important people in his life was his grandfather, Don Pedro, who had encouraged him to keep playing football even when his mother sometimes objected because he destroyed things around the house. At a point in his life, Marcelo Vieira had wanted to leave football when he was very young, but his grandfather encouraged him to continue.

Marcelo would remain very close to his grandfather until 2014 when he died of cancer during the World Cup.
