He was born to Paul Hoskins and Cathy Reynolds and he grew up alongside his sister, Meloria Hoskins. Hoskins is an American by nationality and belongs to white ethnicity.

Hoskins attended the prestigious Jesuit High School in Carmichael, California before enrolling into California State University, Sacramento, where he had the golden opportunity to tap into his passion for baseball. There he began his baseball career playing for the Sacramento State Hornets, the college baseball team, for three seasons. Hoskins was then drafted to the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB draft but his debut game as a professional player was with the Williamsport Crosscutters, a minor league Baseball of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League. With them, he scored a .273 batting average with 40 runs batted in (RBIs) and 9 home runs.

Hoskins second season in 2015 was with Lakewood BlueClaws of the Class A South Atlantic League before he was moved to the Clearwater Threshers of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League and with them, he was able to score a combined .319 batting average, 17 home runs and 90 RBIs. In 2016, he moved to the Reading Fightin Phils, another Minor league baseball of the Class AA Eastern League. There he batted .281 with 38 home runs and 116 RBIs and was named the  Eastern League Rookie of the Year. Rhys Hoskins also received the Paul Owens Award as one of the two best position players in the Phillies’ minor-league system.

After these great achievements, Hoskins went ahead to spend his 2017 with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs of the Class AAA International League. Philadelphia Phillies and within a short while, precisely on the 10th of August 2017, he was called up from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Major Leagues. That same day he debuted as a left fielder and got his first MLB single hit. Within the same month also, Hoskins hit his first two MLB home runs and became the fastest player to hit ten career home runs by hitting a home run in 5 consecutive games. This earned him the NL Rookie award of the Month for August.

The following month was as successful as the previous for Hoskins- he set a record for the fastest player to hit twelve home runs, doing so in just 24 games, he hit his 15th and 16th home runs, in 32 games on September 12, hit his 17th home run, in 33 games on September 13, became the fastest player in history to hit his 9th through 17th career home runs, and he hit his 18th home run, in 34 games, 118 at-bats, and 145 plate appearances on September 14. By the middle of the month of September Rhys Hoskins had four RBI, for a total of 43 in his first 39 games, which was second only to Albert Pujols, who had 44 RBI in his first 39 games. The professional player ended his 2017 rookie year with his 131st at-bat on September 18. He finished 4th in voting for NL Rookie of the Year voting.

Rhys Hoskins has a girlfriend whose name is Jayme Bermudez. She works for a public relations firm in Philadelphia. Like Rhys, Bermudez grew up in California and attended Cal Polytechnic State University.
